Divisional Governance & Assurance
In addition to our efforts and focus on individual recommendations, internally Criminal Justice Services Division are developing a divisional audit and assurance framework.
This framework will outline our divisional approach to audit and assurance and will include internal audit of decision making and record keeping on the National Custody System and the introduction of annual internal inspections of all primary custody centres by senior operational leaders, at Inspector and Chief Inspector level.
This divisional approach to audit and assurance is intended to identify best practice and emerging issues and allow for early, more pro-active learning in advance of HMICS inspections.
It is hoped that once finalised the divisional audit and assurance framework will provide confidence to HMICS in our efforts and commitment to address the repeated themes they identify in their inspections, particularly around record keeping on the National Custody System.
The framework will ensure a more co-ordinated approach to learning and continuous improvement from other external scrutiny findings in addition to HMICS, such as recommendations from Fatal Accident Inquiries and PIRC investigations.
