National Conversation: Live Facial Recognition technology

An ongoing conversation, inviting the views and opinions of the public and stakeholders on the use of live facial recognition technology in policing, brought practitioners, experts and academics together to discuss the issues surrounding its use.

Topic: Technology

The Scottish Police Authority, Scottish Biometrics Commissioner and Police Scotland have hosted an event in Edinburgh today, Friday 16 May 2025, as part of the National Conversation on the use of Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology in policing.

The event follows public and stakeholder engagement via online surveying and focus groups. Practitioners, experts and independent regulators came together today to contribute to the discussion to better understand how the technology is currently used and overseen in other jurisdictions.

We are grateful to Metropolitan Police, National Police Chiefs' Council, Niamh Nic Daeid, Information Commissioner's Office and the University of Stirling for their input and to the various groups and individuals who have engaged and offered their views to inform this ongoing conversation.

The outcome of the will be considered by the Authority's Policing Performance Committee on 10 June 2025, alongside next steps.
