DNA Database

This page tells you about the DNA database in Scotland.

Samples of blood, saliva, hair, and skin that have been left at a crime scene can be extracted, and a DNA profile compiled by Forensic Services. That individual profile can then be searched against DNA profiles kept on the database.

DNA is a vital tool for policing. Samples can be taken from a subject, as well as a crime scene.

Powers under the Criminal Procedure (Scotland) Act 1995 (as amended) allow Police Scotland to take and retain samples from certain individuals.

The National Systems Support department in Police Scotland administers the Scottish DNA Database. Forensic Services does the DNA profiling.

All profiles on the Scottish DNA Database are exported to the National DNA Database (except volunteers for intelligence-led screenings). This gives all police forces throughout the UK the ability to search for profile and crime scene matches.
