Forensic Firearms or Ballistics, as it is sometimes known, is one of the specialisms within Forensic Science.
In this is a field the Forensic Scientist is expected to have a knowledge of firearms, ammunition and firearms legislation.
Most of the work performed by the Firearms team is laboratory based, although we are also highly experienced at Firearm Crime Scene Investigation. This involves attending firearm-related incidents in Scotland, assisting the Criminal Justice System by ensuring best evidence recovery at the scene of crime and subsequent examinations.
By delivering this service we provide the Scottish Criminal Justice Service with a complete Crime Scene to Court model.
The Firearms Department works to an internationally recognised accredited quality standard and is subject to annual auditing by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). This ensures the work is of integrity and of the highest standard.
Most Forensic Firearms scientists are educated to degree level, although a significant proportion of the training is received on the job.
