Ignitable Liquid Residue Analysis

The examination and analysis of items for the presence of ignitable liquid residues is undertaken within the Chemistry section of Forensic Services SPA.

Analysis for the presence of such residues is normally requested following an incident where there has been a fire and there is a suspicion that an ignitable liquid has been used.

Samples for analysis can be submitted in relation to scenes of crime and fire investigations.

The analysis is carried out using Automated Thermal Desorption Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometry (ATD-GCMS).

Commonly encountered ignitable liquids can included petrol, paraffin, white spirit and diesel.
