The Chair of the SPA, Susan Deacon has today provided a public update on key appointments to the leadership of policing.
Over the course of this year, the SPA will make a number of key appointments which will be pivotal to the future operation and leadership of both Police Scotland and the SPA.
This includes the appointment of a new Chief Constable and also the appointment of Deputy Chief Constables and Assistant Chief Constables.
The SPA will also require to appoint a new Chief Officer and other key positions within the Authority.
This is a significant programme of work and an opportunity to shape the future structure and culture of the leadership of policing in Scotland. It is not just about one individual but about building a leadership team for policing in Scotland.
Strengthening the resilience of the Police Scotland senior leadership team at DCC and ACC level is the first priority and recruitment processes for these posts will commence in the coming week.
This prioritisation was endorsed by the interim Chief Constable and his leadership team at the Board meeting.
The recruitment process of a new Chief Constable will commence in the coming weeks. This will be an open, rigorous and competitive process, open to any candidates with senior experience of policing in the UK, which meets the requirements set out in legislation.
The aim is for the successful candidate to be appointed in the Autumn and so be in place by the end of the year
With regards to the SPA, the current interim chief officer is on secondment until the end of the year, however the Board needs to think now about what they want from that post and from the wider management structure of the SPA in the future.
In summary, over the coming months, taking forward this programme of senior appointments will be the top priority for the Chair and a major programme of work for the Authority.
The Board also approved the establishment of a Succession Planning and Appointment Committee which will create appropriate oversight, expertise and guidance for this significant range of appointments and will create a channel through which progress is reported regularly back to the Board.
