The SPA's Chief Executive, John Foley has responded to this development saying:

"The SPA sends our sincere condolences to the family of Mrs McKay.

"I can confirm that Police Scotland briefed the SPA of an emerging issue around this missing person investigation earlier today, in line with our agreed principles of early engagement.

"We will continue to monitor and seek assurances on this issue over the coming days. It is the right and appropriate approach for Police Scotland to have invited further external scrutiny from PIRC and we will be actively monitoring progress and developments with that, and indeed reviewing with Police Scotland any further or immediate implications."
